eventyret om kontainere fra Dubai og Miss Pam fra UK

Once upon a time there was two containers in the port of Dubai, a reefer called CGMU and a standard container called BSIU.. the reefer was a very old container not very nice to look at. A Mr. Oskar from Norway called Mr. Lars at Owe Wrist in Dubai asking if he could send 2 full containers with food to a crew on a boat in east Africa. Kenya. They had almost no food onboard and began to starve.. and were longing to get European food with good quality
Mr. Lars at Wrist said of course he should do this as fast as possible. The man from Norway said the Containers must be in Mombasa latest for the boat 8 March. Mr. Wrist was a very good salesman and he said no problem they should be there in due time. Mr. Oskar ordered Toilet paper, coke, rice, jam, cheese and lot of things including frozen food. This should be sent House to Pier, or should it be house to boat?
The chandler, started to look for a container line that could bring the food to Mombasa, which is close to pirate land. And this took a very long time. He found CGMU and BSIU and loaded one with frozen stuff and the other one with dry food. The container line was happy to get the containers filled up, and hired, the old reefer was happy to do some work. But there was no boat to carry them to Mombasa.
After a while the container line CGM/CMU found a vessel, but then it had become 11th March. Later than the food was promised to be in Mombasa. Mr. Wrist denied the messages about this, and sent the containers to Africa. The containers had a nice trip down pass the Africa`s Horn, down the coast of Somalia to Mombasa. The containers arrived in Mombasa 18th of March. A few days after the Coral has left Mombasa.
The customs in Mombasa took very good care of the containers, plugged in the reefer to keep the good frozen temperature. But no one knew what to do, all the food in Mombasa, the boat with the crew that should have it was in Tanzania, the container line had no port calls in Tanzania. So the containers were stucked in Mombasa. The agent in Mombasa started to custom clear and prepare the food to be delivered, even that he was not aware of how and where.
In the meantime the containers were accompanied by Miss PAM from UK. She was also bound for the same vessel, also in good hands of the customs. The agent tried to get her out from the port and on a flight to Tanzania, but the customs said she was bound for a boat in Mombasa, and therefore illegal to send her by a flight out of Kenya.
In middle of April, the containers and Miss Pam thought they would be in Mombasa forever. Then Mr Bjørn that have replaced Mr. Oskar and Mr. Fugro had a call from the crew in Tanzania, they were close to death and have started to eat on chairs and furniture on the boat. the short call said: “We need the food.. In order to save the lives of the sailors”. It was at this stage decided to send the supply vessel Bjørkhaug to Mombasa to pick up the food and Miss Pam along with some other things.
Mr. Jonny travelled to Mombasa in order to free the food and Miss PAM.. He arrived Mombasa a few days before Bjørkhaug. Together with the agent, Mr. Dainty and Mr Minnis they manage to free the containers from Customs. And it looks very good for the food to be released.
But when in Africa days are never boring, Mr. Minnis and Mr. Dainty had used a man called Chasah to help them with custom releasing of the containers.. And it appear that he owe some money to the port. The port would not release the containers before they got the payment for this. As good agents Mr. Minnis and Mr. Dainty got approval from the big man James and paid this bill. Off course in good faith, thought everything was good to go.
But then the line said there were some other containers that had been bound for a vessel called Celtic, and there was a big invoice for rental due for them, as they had stayed in port 6mnds. The line has found that these containers belong to the same company, would therefore not release the food containers before they got the rent paid. The rent was paid… big money.. So then everything should be good.
This is Africa; the port said the actual containers were manifested from House to House, not from House to Birth. And they wanted a letter state this fact, and the letter to be prepared by dedicated person. This letter was made.. And now all thought it should be fine.
Just a small issue came up, agent has to get a custom officer to attend at the office to authorize the delivery.. A custom officer was picked out of his house 0200 in the night and brought to port office, then when the port should put all this into the computer. The system broke down. And they asked us to come back in the morning.
In the meantime, Bjørkhaug has arrived Mombasa and had loaded Miss PAM she was lucky onboard. Together with all other shipments bound for Coral who had been “stored” in Kenya.
Morning time agent and shore rep. went to port office with good faith.. Today we have the containers moved. But hang on it is not that easy. New manifest had to be made, with statement House to Pier, including stripping authorization at the pier. This was done. Then all should be good to go…
Off course we had forgot one thing. Now it has become a new type of shipment of the containers. It is also a new billing and that has to be paid before anything can be moved. Including the fact that at this stage the container has stayed in port so long time and next rent is due… Off course this payment was done.
The office who deal with this in the port of Mombasa is the ONE STOP OFFICE- one stop due to the effective way they handle all issues.!!!
Agents and shore rep. had the documents including the release note of two containers, we ran over to the transport department. And ask them to take the containers to birth 12 alongside Bjørkhaug. Then he said, this is not how we do it, you must have an order issued and wait in the que. …….GRRR
He looked at our sad faces and smiled and said, yes I should help you guys, and things happened. Labors came, crane driver, forklift and the man to cut the seal came on a motorcycle… so could customs release the containers
All the food was loaded to Bjørkhaug, and they went to Tanzania, saved the life of all the crew onboard Coral.
And if you ever visit Port of Mombasa, the CGMU and the BSIU may still remain there.. Ready for the next job
